Should I purchase the reasonably
priced one for a couple of dollars?
Or should I over pay for an over
engineered product that gets
similar or less effective results?
Since the invention of the wheel many have tried to reinvent it with little
more success than changing its appearance. We can all agree the wheel
still rolls along today as it did from its inception except in today’s wheel
market the price range for rolling down the road is astronomical. Does it
have to be? Probably not…. do some of us like fancy chrome
wheels…the answer is yes. Do you need fancy high priced gutter covers
to keep leaves and other debris from clogging your gutter system...the
answer is NO.
Please find below a list of gutter protection products. We have tried to group
them into categories.
SCREENS
STRAINERS
HOODS
Although we do not recommend gutter screens they are an inexpensive
option for home owners that have large leaves or are trying to keep
animals or birds from entering their gutters. We find that the hole pattern is
to large for most applications allowing seeds and needles to enter and
clog both the screen and the gutter system.
Price range $1.00-$2.50 per lineal foot installed
Leaf Terminator, The Solution, Gutter Rx, Shur Flo, Leaf Relief, Leaf
Defender, to name a few. Strainers are a good choice for homes that
are not exposed to pine needles and small stems as they easily enter
the holes clogging the downspout outlets.
Hoods in or opinion are not recommended as they in most cases
void your roof warranty because lifting shingles are required
breaking the factory seal. In the example below the home owner
lost at least one course of shingles. We over the years have
seen gutter systems with hoods installed filled with birds nests,
bee hives, trees and other plants growing in them. We have
never sold them and never will. Gutter Helmet, k-guard, Leaf
Guard are some of the companies that use hood technology.
Price Range $3.00-$12.00 per lineal foot installed.
FILTERS
Whether your trying to get the latest electronics, new car with all the bells
and whistles or a gutter cover for your home, there are always going to be a
person or company out there that’s going to try and sell you the latest design.
Whether or not it’s better or worse than the standard get the job done design
remains to be seen. More often than not the only thing different are the
unnecessary bells and whistles and the range in prices. In some cases these
extras reduce the effectiveness of the product, increases the cost making the
new product less cost effective. Some salespeople play on the consumers
what we like to call the “keep up with the Jones” compulsion. “This is the best
product on the market today, everyone else has last year’s model, the other
guy’s product costs way less than ours so it must be junk”. In reality if the
product you are looking to purchase is similar to other competing products,
the price should be similar.
This holds true in the gutter cover industry as well. In recent years there have
been a multitude of new gutter protection products come on the market with
varying degrees of success not only in keeping the gutters they are installed
on clean and free flowing but creating revenue for the manufacturers,
installers and sales reps. that sell them. Let’s be honest people that are in the
business of manufacturing, installing and selling products to the consumer
are in business to make money and if they can’t make a profit they won’t be in
business for long. The question is how much is too much, and are you, the
consumer getting a value for your money? Let’s just say for argument sake
we are in a free market society today and businesses can charge whatever
they want for their product or service. In a true free market it is up to the
purchaser to do his or her due diligence to be able make an intelligent
decision about the purchases they make.
FOAM
Price range $10.00-$20.00 and in some cases we have heard of
people paying in excess of $50.00 per lineal foot
GUTTER GEAR
GUTTER PROTECTION
Filter type gutter covers utilize a fine mesh stainless steel screen
over top of, in many cases the old fashion aluminum gutter screen
or other stiffener to keep the mesh from falling into the gutter. As
with most filters they will have to be replaced due to the fine mesh
becoming coated with dust and other fine material. Rhino Guard
and Leaf Filter are a couple of the many covers utilizing the micro-
mesh technology.
Price range $12.00-$25.00 per lineal foot
Foam? All we can say about Foam gutter covers is "rip off".We have been
removing this (in our opinion "JUNK") for several years now. It rots,
deteriorates falls in and allows plants to grow in and on it. One of the
window advertisers in the area used to sell something similar that they
caulked into the gutter...what a mess. AVOID AT ANY PRICE!!!
Price range $3.00-$25.00 per lineal foot

Many of the gutter covers on the market today are franchise or guaranteed
territory sales groups that hire subcontractors to install their products. When sales
people, sales managers, and franchise fees are added to the final cost higher
consumer prices are unavoidable.

Please take some time to read the information that we have compiled for
you on this subject as there are many companies out there selling products to the un-informed
public, mainly the elderly at extremely high prices. A simple rule of thumb is take the amount of
annual gutter cleaning cost and multiply it by 15 years (the average life span of a properly installed
gutter system) if the price of your gutter protection is greater...it's typically not worth the cost.
EXAMPLE: If the cost of cleaning your gutters is $100.00 annually and you get a quote for a gutter
cover of $3500.00
$100.00 x 15 yrs =$1500.00
NOW DIVIDE THE COVER COST BY $1500.00 TO FIND OUT HOW MANY GUTTER SYSTEMS YOU WILL
HAVE TO PURCHASE OVER THE SAME TIME FRAME.
$3500.00
$1500.00
In this example it would take 35 years to justify the cost of the cover price verses just cleaning them
and that would mean the covers/gutter system would have to last 35 years which is not likely. That
means that you would spend $8155.00 over the same time period replacing the gutters and covers
every 15 years (if the system lasted an average of 15 years). If you do not plan to spend more than
the amount of time in your home it would take to recoup the cost of the covers you purchase you
may want to just pay to have them cleaned.
CLEAN OR COVER?
= 2.33 x 15yrs = 35yrs
